Sunflower Market is actually very fairly priced as far as produce goes. That's where I buy all my produce, Whole Foods is very overpriced for produce but their canned/bagged/etc. goods are fairly priced when compared to other higher end grocery stores.

If you want to compare to Smith's, Wal-Mart and Target...yes you are getting scammed. If you compare the quality of food though, the extra price makes up for it.

Everything that is Certified Organic at a store like Whole Foods, Harmons or Sunflower is actually organically grown.

I did a research project in one of my classes last semester about all this.

I'm going to echo aaron's sentiment here. For the most part, if you stick to places like Whole Foods you are getting what you pay for. That is, you get products that are either organically grown, or contain enough organic products to be considered Organic by the FDA.

However, there definitely is a trend in the food world towards "green washing". This is when companies take an existing product and rebrand it as "natural". The label "organic" is regulated by the FDA and requires adherence to fairly strict standards. However, anything labeled "natural" should be considered suspect to skepticism.

TL;DR If you buy organic it's organic. If you buy "all natural" it's probably just the same old factory produced food item.

Oh, and also, I have read / heard on NPR that studies suggest organically grown food has no helath benefits over traditional farming. Essentially, when you buy organic produce or other products, you're making an ethical statement, rather than a health statement.

Oops regulated by the USDA, not FDA.
